Borneo: Woody Scent Artisanal Extrait | Le Cult 1944

Borneo is born from Salgari and imagined tropical woods. A highly concentrated woody spicy Extrait de Parfum, created by Master Perfumer Lino Armentano.

There's a book with a truly unique and special island inside it, one that Emilio Salgari described better than any geographer. Wild, humid, fragrant with wood and tropical rain, a place that generations of Italian children inhabited through its pages even before finding it on a map. The island of Borneo, which served as the backdrop for the adventures and loves of a timeless hero embraced by every generation: Sandokan. Le Cult 1944's Borneo is born from that precise memory: not from the real island, but from the imagined one. And often, as we know, imagination smells better than reality.

The moment Borneo was born

Lino Armentano, Master Perfumer at Le Cult 1944, it was evening. He was re-reading Salgari, one of those returns to childhood books that happen for no particular reason, for pure pleasure. At one point, he closed the book. Not because it was finished: but because he had felt something. A precise, clear scent, which wasn't in the room but was unmistakably present. Dense forest. Wet wood. A wild flower that had no name but had a very clear olfactory shape. The air of a place he had never visited but recognized perfectly. He got up, went to the laboratory, and started working. That evening became Borneo.

Extrait de Parfum: why concentration changes everything

Le Cult 1944 works exclusively with Extrait de Parfum, the highest and most concentrated form that exists in the hierarchy of artistic perfumery. The concentration of essential oils is between 20 and 40% of the total composition, compared to 5-15% for a standard Eau de Parfum and 2-4% for an Eau de Toilette. It's not a technical detail: it's a strategic choice, a clear statement of where they want to stand. What changes concretely? Everything. The sillage works on the skin, blends with body heat and becomes something unique for the wearer. The evolution is slower and richer: the top, heart, and base notes unfold over time with a progression that simply doesn't exist in a lower concentration. The longevity is in another category: hours and hours, with traces on fabrics lasting until the next day. An Extrait is not sprayed abundantly. It is applied sparingly, on wrists and neck, and allowed to work. The perfume does the rest by itself.

The olfactory personality of Borneo

Borneo belongs to the woody spicy fragrance family.

  • The opening, the Top Notes, is entrusted to Violet: the most modest flower that exists in perfumery, one that never imposes itself but leaves an unmistakable trail. Slightly powdery, slightly green, it opens Borneo with a delicacy that contrasts and thus amplifies the depth of what comes next.
  • The heart is Sandalwood and Cedarwood: a warm and material forest, with that enveloping quality that only premium woods can provide.
  • The base, Ambergris and Musk, closes with a long and persistent softness that transforms the perfume into a second skin. A perfume that changes and never tires

There's a quality that distinguishes great perfumes from merely good ones: the ability to smell slightly different every time. Different depending on mood, season, skin temperature. Borneo has this quality, and the Extrait concentration further amplifies it. In summer, the Violet emerges with more freshness. In autumn and winter, the woods and Ambergris become deeper. Those who wear it for the first time describe it as mysterious. Those who have worn it for years simply describe it as their own. Who wears Borneo and when Borneo has no gender. It has character. It is worn by those who prefer a scent that doesn't announce itself from afar but leaves a memorable trail. Those who read, those who travel slowly, those who choose carefully. The perfect occasions: Sunday mornings with all the time to oneself, autumn evenings with a book and soft light, an aperitif where one wants to be remembered without having sought it. It's also the perfect gift for someone with subtle taste, someone who might say 'I wouldn't have chosen this' and then can't stop wearing it.
