Memory and Inspiration

Patchouli arrived in Europe on spice ships, hidden among the precious fabrics that oriental merchants brought to Venice and Genoa. They used it to protect the cloths from insects during the long journey, and the smell remained as an indelible signature. We encountered it much later, in a Marrakech market at sunset, amidst sacks of spices and twenty-year-old carpets. You don't forget that first time.
